March 22, 2012Consigli Completes $48.3 Million Renovation and Environmental Improvements at Massport Terminal B Parking Garage
BOSTON, MA – Extensive renovations and environmental improvements for the Massachusetts Port Authority (Massport) Terminal B Parking Garage at Boston Logan International Airport have been completed by Consigli Construction Co., Inc. (Consigli) nearly one year ahead of schedule. Architect/Engineer for the project was Fay, Spofford & Thorndike (FST) of Burlington, Massachusetts.
Patrons using the newly refurbished parking garage will notice new roadways, new updated elevator lobbies and finishes, brighter lighting, and new signage throughout a safer, more environmentally friendly parking structure.
Originally constructed in the 1970’s, the 500,000 square-foot, 5-level, pre-cast concrete garage provides 2,700 parking spaces for long-term patrons. After over 30 years of heavy use, the garage required significant structural repairs, drainage and environmental improvements in order to extend the life of the building. In addition to the garage renovations, all new perimeter roads including arrivals and departures roadways and ramps were installed.
Environmental improvements involved the replacement of existing lighting with new energy-efficient LED fixtures in the garage, along roadways and walkways, as well as a new crosswalk lighting and safety system—using a total of 49% less electricity than before. In addition, the installation of 1,024 photovoltaic solar panels on the roof is expected to produce over 5% of the garage’s annual electricity consumption. Drainage improvements and two 1,000 gallon rainwater harvesting collection tanks will provide water for maintenance use throughout the airport properties.
Expanding accessibility and convenience, the installation of 240 new pre-cast beams have increased allowable loads, enabling larger, heavier buses to access the upper level departures roadway. Besides new lighting, the safety improvements include new security cameras in the garage and along the roadways; all new fire protection piping; as well as repairs and strengthening of existing concrete columns and girders.
