Maine Medical Center
Project: Maine General Building
Location: Portland, ME
Architect: Becker Structural Engineers, Inc.
One of the first hospitals in the state, the original Maine General Building opened in 1874 now houses the Maine Medical Center’s administrative and executive offices. Working around fully occupied spaces with minimal interruptions, the design/build team of Consigli and Becker Structural Engineers restored the exterior envelope to maintain the historic integrity of this iconic building.
- This comprehensive exterior envelope restoration involved extensive self-performance of all masonry and carpentry.
- Scope of work encompassed a full slate roof replacement, exterior wood trim restoration, restoration of the original window sashes, replacement of deteriorated building stones, cutting and pointing of mortar joints and painting of all exterior elements.
- Coordination included staging erection and developing phasing plans to access partially landlocked buildings as well as creating solutions for moving materials around the job site.
