Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences

Project: Bigelow Center for Blue Biotechnology
Location: East Boothbay, ME
Architect: WBRC Architects • Engineers in association with Perkins + Will

The Bigelow Center for Blue Biotechnology is the first of three buildings in a multi-phased 64-acre campus for Bigelow Laboratory, a world-renowned non-profit center for oceanic research located on the coast of Maine.

  • The 25,600 sq. ft., three-story building houses the world’s first microbial single cell genomics facility, includes state-of-the-art laboratories and a center for the largest collection of marine phytoplankton in the world.
  • Construction achieved advanced levels of sustainability within an established budget and is projected to receive LEED Gold designation. Inside and out, building materials were selected for their low carbon footprint, high use of recycled content, sustainable manufacturing and lifecycle durability.
  • Coordination included responding to the requirements of multiple funding sources, including grants from the Maine Technology Asset Fund and American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, as well as an ambitious multi-phased master plan for three interconnected research centers on the oceanfront campus.
