Project: Bowdoin College Museum of Art
Location: Brunswick, ME
Architect: Machado and Silvetti Associates, Inc.
Bowdoin’s goal of improving and expanding the space in their historic McKim, Mead & White-designed museum (1894) was realized through the addition of a small free-standing glass structure and an expansive below-grade addition.
- Advanced temperature and humidity controls provide Bowdoin with museum-caliber environmental control unavailable with their previous systems
- Opting to hand-dig trenches for underground excavation saved the client significant money while protecting the historic granite foundation of the existing building
- Creative scheduling and phasing approaches allowed Bowdoin to hold commencement activities on the museum steps, continuing a 100-year old campus tradition
