Consigli Completes New Dining Hall for Bates College
Project also includes new Alumni Walk and infrastructure upgrades

Portland, Maine – April 16, 2008 – Consigli Construction Co., Inc.’s Portland operations, in partnership with architect Sasaki Associates of Boston, has successfully completed a new, 60,000 sq. ft. dining hall for Bates College in Lewiston, Maine.

Located between Alumni Gym and Garcelon Field, the Dining Commons accommodates over 950 patrons, and features a host of amenities not commonly found in similar facilities. The main floor features a large dining area with individual serving stations, as well as a high-end commercial kitchen that includes catering operations and support spaces. A striking fireplace lounge offers students a distinctive retreat for during and after meals, while a market opens early and closes late to provide snacks and pre-packaged food.

The upper level features additional seating, several meeting rooms and a lounge area overlooking the fireplace. Up above, the Dining Commons’ ceiling is coated with wood trim. The material is reclaimed from the former Thomas Edison Factory in New London, Wisconsin. This component of the project enhances the building’s sustainability while offering students a first-hand perspective on the value of reclaimed materials. Other sustainable components include dual-flush toilets, natural ventilation during the summer months and occupancy sensors that help control energy consumption.

Consigli’s own crew of self-perform workers oversaw multiple aspects of the construction. This included concrete foundations, slabs and retaining walls, as well as portions of the millwork, a crucial component to meeting schedule after changes to the servery casework and wood portals challenged project deadlines. Outside the building, Consigli oversaw the construction of the 1,200 ft. Alumni Walk, composed of asphalt and granite pavers. Consigli workers self-performed the installation of retaining walls and concrete slabs beneath the walkway pavers.

The project also consisted of connecting the new building and surrounding areas with the campus steam line, an important infrastructure upgrade. Careful scheduling ensured that the steam line was connected prior to the completion of the Alumni Walk, and that the baseball field was reinstalled, backfilled and sodded prior to the team’s arrival in the summer, despite having to be removed weeks earlier for the new line
