FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
The Greater Boston Food Bank Celebrates Warehouse Completion
Consigli oversees construction of the new, green Yawkey Distribution Center and HQ’s
Milford, MA – September 20, 2009 – Consigli Construction Co., Inc. successfully completed the new Yawkey Distribution Center and headquarters for The Greater Boston Food Bank, marked by a ribbon cutting ceremony officially welcoming the public into one of Boston’s largest warehouses that is currently pursuing LEED certification.
The new facility effectively doubles the capacity of the Food Bank’s former home, which was critical in order to grow and distribute more food to its nearly 600 member hunger-relief agencies. As the largest food relief organization in New England, the growth of The Food Bank’s operations was vital to increasing its impact in feeding the hungry. The new building, located in Boston’s Newmarket Business District near the South End, will ultimately accommodate a total of 50 million pounds of food, representing a 67% increase over the old facility.
Consigli and architect Chan Krieger Sieniewicz in Cambridge completed the building on the site of what once was the Boston incinerator, effectively giving a vacant brownfield new life. The facility is pursuing LEED Silver certification, and incorporates numerous sustainable components such as a solar wall, featuring a passive solar heating system, and an energy efficient refrigeration system. In addition, the building has a super insulated roof that reduces summer heat gain by 25% and winter heat loss by 38%, providing significant reductions in heating and cooling costs.
