| After months of providing pre-construction services, Consigli broke ground during the summer of 2005 for a comprehensive program of renovations and an addition to the historic Walker Art Building which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The project was designed by Machado and Silvetti Associates of Boston, Mass.
Work entailed a full renovation of the existing facility and a below-grade addition which together addresses program needs, necessary code and ADA accessibility upgrades as well as security and climate control requirements commensurate with current museum standards. The remodel included a gut of the lower level of the museum, implementing an intense underpinning program involving structural stabilization of the 1894 building. The project also included the complete redesign of the existing museum’s systems (i.e. HVAC, plumbing, electrical, security, sighting, etc.), which were currently inadequate. All interior finishes were removed and replaced with new finishes with the exception of the Rotunda.
Exterior envelope and waterproofing was conduced in the plinth area and undertaken to preserve underground museum storage areas.
