Consigli oversaw construction of the Greater Boston Food Bank’s new warehouse and distribution facility, creating a stunning new headquarters for one of Boston’s most important and recognized non-profit organizations.
The new building is located adjacent to the Suffolk County Correction Facility in South Boston. The new facility, one of the largest warehouses in Boston, is designed to accommodate 40 million pounds of food, and contains 33,000 sq. ft. dedicated to dry storage and 100,000 cubic feet for refrigerated and frozen product. In addition to the added space, which will enable the Food Bank to realize a 15% increase in distribution capacity within their first year of operation, they have also gained more freezer and cooler space, refrigerated docks, and refrigerated shopping areas.
Before construction began, the site was remediated of contaminated soils. Additionally, the structural capacity of the soils was not high enough to support the proposed facility, requiring complex site work to both decontaminate the site and make the necessary reinforcements to support the building. Pre-construction investigation revealed existing piles and foundations, which the team re-used for the new building. Despite having last been used in the 1950s, extensive site investigation and load testing revealed that the pile caps were indeed still useable.
The project is targeting LEED® Silver certification by the USGBC.
