Consigli was selected by the City of Portland to restore the City Hall Clock Tower, which had succumbed to age and ocean influenced weather. The clock tower rises 65 feet above the roof of City Hall, a 94-year old building on the National Register of Historic Places.
The tower’s clock and golden ship weathervane were removed form the dome. The clock was restored by Balzer Family Clock Works in Freeport, ME and the works were moved to a lower level of the tower, where the mechanism can be serviced more easily.
As part of the restoration, cracked and shifted granite blocks were repointed, pinned, or filled with modern epoxy, which breaths and prevents further cracking. Corroded and crumbling concrete floors were reinforced with steel rebar, copper roofing on the dome was replaced, and concrete beams were installed within the parapets.
