Wells National Estuarine Research Reserve
Alheim House

Consigli was contracted to perform pre-construction services and construct a new residence facility for researchers at the Wells Reserve. The wood frame structure includes 9 bedrooms and a commercial kitchen. While the project will not be going after LEED certification, the owner wants to incorporate as much sustainable building as possible.

The project also includes the dismantling and removal of an existing historic post and beam building that was constructed in 1850. The building will be re-built on another site.

The Wells Reserve is a 1600-acre research, education, and recreation facility, a public-private partnership within the National Estuarine Research Reserve System. Reserve facilities are located at Laudholm Farm in Wells, Maine, and include the Maine Coastal Ecology Center.

The Wells Reserve is the only research site on the Gulf of Maine dominated by salt marsh. Up to 100 scientists and students from more than 40 academic and resource management institutions come to study Reserve resources each year. Staff and visiting scientists investigate Gulf of Maine estuaries, salt marshes, and watersheds, producing information needed for sustaining or restoring these coastal habitats and communities. Tangible results of Reserve research include reopening local clam beds for harvest and increasing salt-marsh acreage.
