After providing several months of pre-construction services, Consigli completed the redevelopment of the Whitinsville Spinning Ring Company Mill Complex for the current owner, Alternatives Unlimited, Inc. (Alternatives). This 2 phased project involved the rehabilitation and conversion of 30,000 sq. ft. of space in five mill buildings built between 1826 and 1926. The mixed use facility supports Alternatives’ goal of creating a community ‘crossroads’ combining social, cultural, historical and environmental components.
The Mill’s oldest buildings, the Brick Mill (c.1826) and the Forge (c.1879-1886), are both on the Massachusetts State Register of Historic Places (MSRHP) and are protected by a deed restriction with the Northbridge Historical Commission. The Mill Complex is comprised of a group of historic buildings built between 1826 and 1926 and a separate 1948 administration building. An infill addition was built in the 1960s (exact date to be determined).
The site-work related to this project included a new entrance driveway and parking area, site utilities and landscaping around the new structure. Also included was the creation of a new partially paved / partially decked plaza space made by the demolition of existing buildings. As part of the projects goal to be LEED Silver certified, the buildings use a geothermal heat pump system for heating and cooling.
