Alternatives Unlimited, Inc.

Project: Whitin Mill Redevelopment
Location: Whitinsville, MA
Architect: Austin Architects

Alternatives Unlimited, a non-profit agency aimed at improving the lives of people with developmental or psychiatric disabilities, needed to adapt its properties to better serve its clients. Four of the oldest buildings in the Whitin Mill complex, a group of five historic buildings built between 1782 and 1944, were rehabilitiated and converted into mixed-use facilities.

  • New program spaces include an auditorium, training and conference facility, artist studios, galleries, residential condominiums and a café.
  • Site work involved a new entrance driveway and parking area, site utilities and landscaping, as well as a new decked plaza created by the demolition of existing buildings.
  • The project was awarded LEED Silver certification, thanks in part to the use of a geothermal heat pump system for heating and cooling.
