Project: E52 Renovation and Addition
Location: Cambridge, MA
Architect: Beyer, Blinder, Belle Architects & Planners

The comprehensive renovation and restoration of MIT’s Building E52, originally built in 1938, provides the Department of Economics and Sloan School of Management with updated administrative spaces and an expanded Faculty Club. This gut interior renovation integrates new M/E/P systems and structural infill for the redesigned interior, and a vertical addition for the Faculty Club and conference areas.

Sustainable initiatives to achieve the targeted LEED Silver certification include a full window replacement, energy-efficient systems and introduction of significant natural daylight within the interior of the building.

  • Project logistics responded to working on the active Sloan School campus adjacent to the heavily trafficked Memorial Drive
  • Explored construction methods to bring extensive natural daylight into the historic building
  • Analyzed approaches to add a potential seventh floor to house the Faculty Club and conference spaces
