City of Cambridge, MA

Project: Cambridge Public Library
Location: Cambridge, MA
Architect: William Rawn Associates, Architects, Inc.; Ann Beha Architects

Needing to expand their program space but limited by their desire to preserve the character of the building’s iconic Van Brunt & Howe design (1889), the City of Cambridge opted for an innovative approach-an ultra-modern addition that is unique and integrated
at once.

  • Built to LEED Certification standards, using renewable finish materials and a German-imported double-skin glass curtain wall that maximizes natural light while saving energy
  • Navigated challenging site logistics, working just 15 feet from an occupied school
  • Construction was completed on a phased turnover schedule to ensure a seamless transition from the Library’s temporary location.
