Ragon Institute 2.0 Named Best Higher Education/Research Project in New England by ENR in Annual Awards

CAMBRIDGE, MASS. – The new headquarters for the Ragon Institute of Mass General Brigham, Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Harvard University has been honored by Engineering News-Record (ENR) in its annual awards as the New England region’s Best Project in the Higher Education/Research category.

Ragon 2.0 – located in the heart of Kendall Square – serves as a new, centralized hub for the trailblazing scientists, researchers and staff that support the Ragon Institute’s unique partnership in advancing medical innovation worldwide. Designed to foster collaboration, the 323,000 sq. ft. building features state-of-the-art resources for the Institute’s groundbreaking research, including wet and dry labs, tissue culture rooms and a vivarium equipped with holding and procedure space. A striking, single-helix monumental staircase – comprised of 36 tons of steel and 15 tons of terrazzo and finishes – serves as the building’s centerpiece, delivering visual connectivity across the Institute’s disciplines.

Located on a tight urban site near sensitive facilities, the project required complex demolition, strict work-hour coordination and vibration monitoring to protect neighboring structures. The building’s intricate façade incorporates 15 different systems and more than 120,000 square feet of curtain wall, along with a 1,200-square-foot mass timber skylight and stone sourced from a Swiss quarry. A 16-month design-assist process and extensive offsite prefabrication ensured quality, streamlined project schedule and mitigated pandemic-related supply chain challenges.

Certified LEED Gold, the all-electric-ready building exceeds environmental efficiency goals by more than 60%. The building features triple-pane glazing, heat recovery chilled and hot water plants, high-efficiency plumbing fixtures and a vegetated roof covering more than half the building area to enhance stormwater management and urban ecology.

In addition to this award, Consigli also received an Award of Merit from ENR New England in the Energy/Industrial category for the University of New Hampshire’s Thermal Energy Storage Tank, as well as several other New York regional awards.

Project teams recognized by ENR’s panel of judges were evaluated on their ability to overcome challenges, contribute to industry innovation and benefit the community, as well as overall excellence in design, construction and safety execution.
