University of Massachusetts – Lowell
Project: Campus Recreation Center
Location: Lowell, MA
Architect: ARC/Architectural Resources Cambridge
Serving the entire campus community, the new UMass Lowell Campus Recreation Center forms a campus green shared by the University and its residential neighbors and features a three-court gymnasium, squash and racquetball courts, track, fitness center, locker rooms, saunas, lounge areas and meeting and multipurpose rooms. This publicly-bid project was delivered ahead of schedule with less than 1% change orders.
- Reflecting the design aesthetic of Lowell’s historic mills, the new facility features architecturally exposed structural steel (AESS) throughout, which required a high degree of quality control during procurement and installation.
- Work included extensive coordination of specialty fitness equipment, construction of a temporary pedestrian walkway, as well as drilling of pressure injected footing in the fall to facilitate construction throughout the winter.
- The project has won several awards, including the prestigious national Marvin M. Black Award for project team effectiveness given by the Associated General Contractors (AGC) of America.
