Harvard University undertook the renovation of Wadsworth House to improve accessibility, address aging infrastructure and preserve one of its most historically significant buildings. Built in 1726 and serving multiple roles throughout its history, the nearly 300-year-old structure required comprehensive upgrades including structural restoration, a new wheelchair lift, ADA improvements, façade rehabilitation, historic window restoration and full modernization of mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire alarm and fire protection systems.
Construction presented significant challenges when extensive deterioration was uncovered beneath the building’s first-floor framing and existing foundations. The team implemented a highly coordinated approach involving underpinning, shoring, lagging and foundation reconstruction while preserving as much historic material as possible. Detailed existing conditions documentation, Matterport scanning and BIM coordination supported the integration of modern infrastructure within the historic structure while phased construction, tenant relocations and preservation measures minimized impacts to ongoing campus operations.
