New York Blood Center Campus Receives ENR Award of Merit in Regional Best Project Awards

RYE, N.Y. – The new, consolidated campus for New York Blood Center (NYBC) Enterprises has been honored by Engineering News-Record (ENR) in its annual Regional Best Project Awards with an Award of Merit. The project received the award in the Renovation/Restoration category for the New York region, which was recently featured in ENR’s November issue.

An innovative adaptive reuse project, Consigli Construction Co., Inc. transformed the former Avon corporate headquarters into a new, state-of-the-art hub for NYBC, bringing its tri-state operations – including lifesaving research, blood collections, processing and cell therapy manufacturing – into its first-ever consolidated campus.

The 185,000-square-foot facility underwent a comprehensive transformation to accommodate more than 600 pieces of laboratory equipment within its existing footprint. Unable to expand outward, the project team maximized every square inch of interior space while integrating complex building systems into five mechanical mezzanines, each with only 7 feet of slab-to-deck height. Early laser scanning and fast-tracked demolition provided precise as-built conditions, enabling efficient design and installation.

Sustainability was a key focus, with high-efficiency air source heat pumps featuring heat recovery supporting both heating and cooling—setting a benchmark for sustainable laboratory design in urban environments. The project also included a vivarium constructed as a concrete masonry unit structure within the existing building, featuring a cast-in-place concrete deck with more than 250 coordinated penetrations to meet stringent structural and environmental performance standards.

In addition, Consigli also earned regional project honors in the K-12 Education category. The firm received an Award of Merit for Hackley School’s Allen Center for the Creative Arts and Technology, as well as the category’s Best Project Award for Emma Willard School’s Alice Dodge Wallace ’38 Center for the Performing Arts.

Project teams recognized by ENR’s panel of judges were evaluated on their ability to overcome challenges, contribute to industry innovation and benefit the community, as well as overall excellence in design, construction and safety execution.
