Project Overview

  • 50,000 sq. ft. of new construction managed on a sensitive, occupied research campus
  • The project scope included the installation of specialized equipment, including  marine robotics testing equipment and gantry cranes
  • Extensive pre-construction efforts to analyze major design options, identify value engineering items and establish careful work sequencing

To enhance collaboration and synergy between various groups engaged in the development of underwater vehicles, sensors and autonomous capabilities, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) expanded its campus with the construction of the New Quissett Research & Development Facility.

The new three-story building supports these programs with design spaces, fabrication labs, dry labs and testing facilities for underwater vehicles, mooring wires and seagoing research equipment. The build-space also houses marine robotics and makerspaces with high-bay gantry cranes. The project scope also included the construction of a social hub with meeting spaces, unprogrammed space for the future fit-out of additional office and research programs and a paved yard adjacent to the building for testing and storage of research equipment and parking.

Prior to mobilization, Consigli managed extensive pre-construction value management efforts with WHOI and Dewing Schmid Kearns to provide operational efficiencies and cost value while maintaining NFQ’s unique design. All work was managed on WHOI’s occupied campus adjacent to active laboratory buildings.
