Project: Dowden Hall Expansion
Location: Worcester, MA
Architect: Prellwitz /Chilinski Associates, Inc.
Addressing the rising demand for on-campus student housing, 20-year old Dowden Hall was transformed into a 100,000 sq. ft. campus hub with an addition that incorporates new retail space, wellness center, student activity areas and 170 beds within a LEED Gold level building powered by renewable energy systems.
- Resource-saving building practices, such as the recycling of building materials and sourcing of locally produced materials were applied throughout the 18-month construction process.
- The two-phased addition was sequenced amidst an occupied campus on an aggressive schedule, requiring intensive planning to provide temporary utility service for student residents over two summers.
- The project includes a 4-story glass entry façade, new common spaces and a wide range of student amenities as well as upgrades such as new lighting, tel/data systems, common area finishes, mechanical systems and new bathroom facilities.
