To create a dedicated destination for convening and collaboration, Harvard University developed the David Rubenstein Treehouse as the first building to open within its Enterprise Research Campus. The 55,000 sq. ft. facility serves as a university-wide conference center, featuring flexible meeting and breakout spaces, an 8,000 sq. ft. ballroom, covered loggias, outdoor gathering areas and a rooftop terrace. Designed to evoke the experience of climbing into a treehouse, the building provides a highly visible community hub while establishing a new benchmark for sustainable institutional development through the use of an exposed mass timber structure and low-carbon building materials.

Construction required precise coordination to deliver Harvard’s first mass timber building within an active district undergoing simultaneous development. The exposed timber structure, including signature canted branching columns and cantilevered upper levels, demanded intensive preconstruction planning, advanced digital modeling and close collaboration among design, fabrication and construction teams. Extensive mockups, BIM coordination and constructability reviews helped resolve complex interfaces between the mass timber frame, low-carbon concrete systems, bird-safe glazing and high-performance façade assemblies. The project also incorporated the first structural application of recycled ground glass pozzolan concrete in Massachusetts, supporting Harvard’s ambitious sustainability goals while maintaining quality, schedule and long-term performance requirements.
