Shirley Chisholm Recreation Center
Project Overview
- First NYC DDC design-build project to be completed, establishing a new benchmark for civic project delivery
- LEED Platinum v4-certified facility featuring all-electric building systems and a high-performance building envelope
- Complex recreation center incorporating mass timber construction and an indoor natatorium environment
Developed as a new public recreational facility within Nostrand Playground, the Shirley Chisholm Recreation Center serves as a social and wellness hub for the Central Brooklyn community. The 75,000 sq. ft. facility includes a gymnasium, indoor swimming pool, fitness and weight-training rooms, basketball courts, afterschool program spaces, a media lab and a wrap-around green rooftop. As the first completed design-build project for the NYC DDC, the project established a new benchmark for civic project delivery.
The construction scope combined mass timber, sustainable building materials and all-electric building systems within a complex recreational facility that includes a natatorium and other high-moisture environments. A high-performance building envelope was integrated throughout the facility to support energy efficiency and long-term durability, ultimately contributing to the project’s achievement of LEED Platinum v4 certification supporting New York City’s overarching goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 80 percent by 2050.
